Land disturbing activity such as those involved in clearing, dredging, grading, excavating, transporting, and filling can result in soil erosion if not properly controlled by the use of Best Management Practices (BMP's).
Many local jurisdictions in Georgia have adopted the Georgia Erosion and Sediment Control Manual (The Green Book). The Green Book provides regulations for the control of erosion and siltation runoff and methods to prevent siltation from reaching streams and creeks.
A successful erosion control plan takes into account buffers, state waters and other downstream properties that might be affected by the development of your property. It is critical that the plan is designed to implement BMP's specifically for your site. Failure to do so could result in loss of life, property damage, fines and other legal actions.
Once a permit is issued and development activities commence, Land Development inspectors conduct random erosion and sediment controls (E&SC) inspections to check the various structural and vegetative best management practices utilized on the site.
The Tier I class provides an introduction to stormwater and erosion and sedimentation control, and teaches BMP installers and operators how to properly select, install, and maintain BMPs. This class is a pre-requisite to the Tier II class.
The Indiana Storm Water Quality Manual provides guidelines and specific storm water quality measures for controlling soil erosion; controlling and treating the nonpoint source pollution associated with sediment-laden run-off; and the management and treatment of pollutants associated with post-construction land uses. Adhering to these guidelines and properly applying appropriate storm water quality measures will help minimize the adverse impacts that land disturbance, construction activity, and development can have on soil and water resources, and ultimately, the cost of those impacts to society as a whole. In addition to a variety of storm water quality measures, the manual also discusses the philosophy and planning procedures critical to developing an effective storm water pollution prevention plan.
These publications and guidance documents provide technical assistance for developing soil erosion control and storm water management plans, designing storm water management practices, practicing pollution prevention, and planning public education programs. You can find additional materials in the EGAD/SWIMS digital library, a searchable database of electronic policy and guidance materials used in the DNR's water quality programs. The documents and subject pages listed below can also be found in the EGAD/SWIMS system, but have been highlighted here for easier access.
Update: The Department will be revising sections of the BMP Handbook on a section-by-section basis, and due to these revisions the full version of the manual has been taken down. All sections of the handbook are still available through the links provided below. 59ce067264
